Smashing Pumpkins Song Will Debut In A Super Bowl...
Ok so its a pre-game ad (I once worked on a SB pre-game ad!)… but the Smashing Pumpkins new single “FOL” will be making its premiere as the soundtrack for a Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe commercial. I love the Smashing Pumpkins. I thought their latest tour through NY was awesome. In 2000, they asked Virgin to put out their latest album, Machina II, for free on the Internet. When...
National Geographic To Launch A Record Label →
I wish I had more commentary… mostly I’m just perplexed by the notion of NatGeo is creating an old school, old media style record label when that model is proving ineffective. Hopefully they will suprise us with some fresh thinking.
Audiolife →
Audiolife looks like a good service for indie musicians. It allows you to easily set up an online store, including music, ringtons and merch (think t-shirts)… then it allows you to embed that store on blogs or other sites on the net. They handle all the transactions, production and shipping.
Can Free Content Boost Your Sales? Yes, It Can →
Have you checked out Monty Python’s YouTube channel? It’s got a selection of their brilliant (as always) clips, and it’s got links to buy their DVDs on Amazon. As those crazy Monty Python dudes put it,
“We’re letting you see absolutely everything for free. So there! But we want something in return. None of your driveling, mindless comments. Instead, we want you to click on the links, buy our...
The Thom Yorke Grammy Poster →
I’ve seen a dozen or so blog entries and articles on this topic, so I’m not going to rehash it but instead link to the Pitchfork article. My short summary… very smart. The Grammy’s figured out how to stay relevant. To top it off, Thom Yorke is one of my top creative influences, period.
Death Row Assets Auctioned For $18 Million →
Death Row Records was sold for a mere $18M at auction to WIDEawake Entertainment Group. What an incredible deal! Death Row is responsible for some of the most important rap albums in the 90’s including Dr Dre’s, The Chronic, which introduced the world to Snoop Dogg. Also included in this deal, is a “significant” amount of unreleased materials. Death Row filed for bankruptcy...
Krist Novoselic writes about music and games →
Great post from Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic on Rock Band 2:
More recently, while walking through a one-stop shopping center, I encountered the Rock Band 2 video game. It was set up on display for customers to try.
I know about Rock Band, because Nirvana has some songs on it. I had never tried the game before, so I gave it a go. I worked through the menu and found the song “In...

How Warner Music Killed Facebook Music →
Total Music, a joint venture by Universal and Sony BMG, has had Facebook target from the beginning. The labels approach the Internet from two directions. The first is the command and conquer approach, which is how imeem, MySpace and others were neutered. Sue the hell out of whoever dares to host music online, then cut a deal with them that brings in millions of dollars in penalties and fees.
The...
Nine Inch Nails Still Love Their Fans →
In a blog post on the official band web site, band leader Trent Reznor says that someone “somehow managed to film a substantial amount (over 400 GB!) of raw, unedited HD footage from three separate complete shows of our Lights in the Sky tour,” and provides a link to the footage.
Many other bands *cough* Metallica *cough* would be angry at quality footage of their shows being leaked on the...
