I’ve started thinking about single-purpose applications. For instance if we are working together on Skype or IM and want to use an effective shared whiteboard tool we could easily teleport from skype into a collaborative workspace. Ideally that workspace spins up and down on demand. There could also be an application for remote presentations, interactive webcasts, conferences, etc.

An example of a social application might be jumping from IM into a cool lounge with some friends to listen to music from my itunes collection.

This expands to mirror worlds where you may use Google Maps to find directions to my place but then we fly through them together.

I think some combination of useful applications that give people a reason (even if its only 1 reason) to have an avatar would be instrumental in widespread adoption.
