Recipricating on SNS
Read two tweets this morning that got me thinking:
Spin: Someone pointed out that they don’t even bother adding people back in FriendFeed and I realized, I rarely do either. Lazy? Snobby?
epredator: hello to all my new followers, I have followed back. Co-twitting is essential I think :-)
I have recently changed my sns behaviors on Twitter to only follow people I know, have met in real life or who I’m extremely interested in. I don’t think its snobbery as spin suggests with FriendFeed, I think its becoming information overload. Social Nets can be a really effective way to communicate with your friends, co-workers and colleagues or a really good way to keep a loose connection with a lot of personalities on the Internet. The more people who join social networks that I know intimately the more useful it becomes as a communication device and the more I want to filter out all of the “noise”. I’m only doing this on Twitter and FriendFeed which have a lot of “noise” but am thinking about doing the same with Facebook and other sns sites I use.
As far as @epredator’s tweet about recipriacting the follow, it is more important in the “keep loose tabs on internet personalities” scenario. However, I’m not subscribing to that philosphy. I love when people follow me, even if I choose not to recipricate because I see myself as a publisher of my own lifelog. I want to publish it, in a way that makes it free and easy for anyone to consume my lifelog.
Another interesting thing to consider is the moment a client friends you on a sns… but that’s for another time.
