Becky Carella

Becky

Happy Ada Lovelace Day, an international day of blogging to draw attention to the achievements of women in technology and science. Today I’m going to celebrate Super + Fun cofounder, Becky Carella. Becky is a third generation female science & technologist. Her grandmother is a published chemist and was an influential voice during her career. Her mother holds a degree in Biology and is responsible for  databases and statistical analysis for a major call center.

I met Becky at Dartmouth where we hit it off famously and eventually got married. She is a maker. I’ve seen her design and build embedded hardware. I’ve seen her create applications for mobile, web, Second Life and Facebook in every language you can imagine. I’ve also seen her create quilts, yoga bags, Kindle cases and all kinds of other fun stuff.

Here is a partial list of her science and technology accomplishments since I met here:

  • Earned her Bachelor of Engineering from Dartmouth (after getting a computer science degree from Smith)
  • Earned her Masters degree in engineering from Dartmouth
  • Designed and created the hardware and software for a digital spirometer that fit into the body of an inhaler and transmitted test results to a server. It was the most ambitious and impressive Masters Thesis I have ever seen.
  • Created a mobile application that allowed emergency response commanders to remotely monitor the health of emergency responders in the field.
  • Created linux based software that ran on a gumstix to collect sensor data and distribute it over an ad-hoc wireless sensor network
  • Developed numerous games and interactive experiences in Second Life for Fortune 500 companies
  • Lead developer on the Emmy Award winning The L Word in Second Life
  • Led the development of a sophisticated user-generated content ecommerce site for virtual goods. Think, Etsy for virtual goods.
  • Worked on virtual worlds for fashion, big media, toys and live music
  • Created a virtual goods/micro-transaction engine for Facebook games and virtual worlds
  • Founded Super + Fun, a social games and funware company
  • Created Super + Fun’s first product, BlitzPick Baseball
