The Killers - Human
The latest The Killers album, titled Day & Age dropped yesterday. I’m a big fan of The Killers and was anticipating the new album.
Human, the first single released off this album contains lyrics that perplex many at first listen. The line that has people talking is:
“Are we human or are we dancer?”
The line is inspired by Hunter S. Thompson[1] who once said about the American media, “We’re raising a generation of dancers.” Think of “dancer” as a race not an occupation. Are we raising the human race or the dancer race? In this case, the dancer follows and never leads, stays in line and never moves outside of their comfort zone.
This is lyrical poetry; he’s making a social statement. I have certainly asked this question myelf but am encouraged by recent events such as the 2008 U.S. Presidential election, that the Internet is creating a true participatory culture. Gone are the days of couch potatoes, making way for millions of individuals making their voices heard on the Internet. We are empowering the human race.
The whole album is great. The Killers have managed to capture mainstream success, while stepping outside of the mainstream formula. Their combination of new wave and arena rock influences ooze out of every song.
